I tried Google Spreadsheets and no I don't see the point

I received this morning from Google an invitation to try Google Spreadsheets.

OK it's a cool toy, but I think it's just a gizmo. No way a company will let Google keeping their sales report on their server!

So unless someone really clever come with some really motivated reason to go Google, I will prefer Office.

I think it's time for Google to go back to their core business, the Search engine and improve on this domain rather than playing a futile game of competition with Microsoft.

It looks like some blokes really think we are ready to abandon our personal data to some remote datacenters. I think they forgot too easily that we are way beyond the old time of mainframe computing.

  • I don't think Google Spreadsheets is aimed at corporate use, it is aimed at home users who will use this with their non-critical data - shopping lists, pocket money etc. Maybe some small businesses will use it for their accounts. Office is too expensive for these users, and Google Spreadsheets will be a welcome service to them. The fact that the data is remotely stored is a big plus, so is the collaboration.

Gmail, hotmail, flickr, del.icio.us etc would disagree with you? It Seems to me that plenty of people are willing to store their data on remote datacenters.

Why is it futile? They seem to be doing pretty well when they do compete with Microsoft.

This statement seems silly to me. Are you suggesting that we unplug our network cables?
