Please Microsoft give us SQL 2005 Enterprise Manager!

I am quite amaze that nobody on the SQL blogs don't complain too much about SQL 2005 Management Studio but if I google a bit on the subject, I can find a lot of DBAs ranting about the bloated SQL 2005 replacement of Enterprise Manager.

OK EM was not without faults, but in a remote environnement, I never had any troubles. With SQL 2005 MS, it's really a disaster. Too many clicks to query something, so slow even if you use it locally, and the network configuration tool is totally useless. I never succeeded accessing the SQL 2005 server using Management Studio from my PC, the only way for me has to be by Remote Desktop, a shame! With Enterprise Manager, it's a breeze and it's fast.

I think Microsoft forget too much about all the daily tasks we need to do directly like a last change in a record or a field addition. It can't be done all the time through a custom administration tool.

It's also a pity that I can't use Enterprise Manager to connect to a SQL 2005 DB, this would have give me some choice. So maybe it's time for the SQL Team to release a lightweight SQL 2005 Management Studio as soon as possible.

  • That management studio is a HOWLING DOG! I too long for the old EM. I am even giving serious thought to developing my own EM for day to day usage!

  • Totally agree! Sql 2005 MS is slow, the export Sql script function is not as good as in EM, takes to long to start up etc etc...

  • Management Studio is so much better! No more EM for me...

  • Check "Aqua Data Studio". It is fast and connects to SQL SErver 2K and 2K5 with ease. Plus it's free !!

  • Aqua Data Studio is not free anymore

  • I used to depend on 2000 EM being open, w/Profiler, on a second monitor while the main monitor was used for code, but that seems to be unthinkable now.

  • Management Studio just rocks!
also no more EM for me.. !!
also, things should improve with SP2

  • Importing data and using the scripting in EM is better - but using red-gate's tools in Sql 2005 helps it rock!

SQL prompt 3 and SQL Refactor are superb.

  • "Open Top x Rows" was a great feature in EM.
Now all I get is open Table!... and bring back every record in my table, are you kidding me!

  • Yeah I gotta disagree too I like Management Studio a lot better and I've never had any issues connecting remotely. Did you check your filewall? :P

  • Managment studio is bad and it's unbearably slow. EM had some silliness to it, but it was easier to use, faster and less cluttered.

  • Team manager: "Gentleman. We have a simple product with plenty of features. What can we do in 2005?"

Developer 1: "Well, we could take prominent features like 'auto-increment' and obscure them deep into the interface. We also found that developers sometimes execute queries so they could modify the fields right in the interface. We could disable that feature. Is that alright sir?"

Team manager: "That's a good direction, but how are we going to triple the size of the installation if we're removing all the useful stuff?"

Developer 2: "With all due respect, your doubt about our ability to do that offends me."
