My New Nifty Desktop

Everyone's been going nuts over Tony Pino's desktop lately in the .NET Desktops contest, myself included. I was more taken by his graphics work than anything else. Well, he was kind enough to hook me up with the picture file, and a tip on how he did it.

*whispering* shhh... it's an iframe... ;)

So I wanted to create the feed system at the right, without the hassles of writing RSS parsing code, or dealing with Scoble's titleless feeds [butthead ;) ]. So I whipped out the templated RSS control that Interscape will be selling within the next 2 months.. I figured it would be a great test of the component.... see if I could break it.

Sure enough, News.com's 20-item master feed broke it. That's ok tho.. I knew it wasn't quite ready for prime time yet. It looks really slick tho. Automatically refreshes every 5 minutes... no more needing to have my aggregator open all the time.

Oh yeah, and Tony's desktop looks REALLY slick with my new Longhorn skin. I posted a copy in my personal weblog's image gallery. (The box w/ two missing images is a Google search box... waiting for Tony to send me those graphics.)

Maybe if there is enough interest I'll post about how it all works (including the Longhorn Theme).

  • It's Scobleizer ;).

I saw the project.. It's really slick. Congrats, you did a great job. The point was not to favor one specific desktop system over the other, it was to provide a killer, real world example of this web control we're going to be selling. Obviously if it doesn't handle titles very well, or whatever borked up RSS that the News.com feeds have, I shouldn't be selling it. That's all.

  • No prob. Just wanted to see if you were aware of it. I did mine just 'cause it's a useful example for many different ASP.NET topics. My next being how to provide real-time status updates during the processing of an ASP.NET page. Hope you visit my blog in the future.
