Time to Move?

I’m starting to think it’s about time I moved this blog. I’ve appreciated not having to worry about hosting and taking advantage of Microsoft’s hosting bandwidth, but it has been frustrating at times not having as much control as I wanted. The weblogs.asp.net server in particular seems to have branched from the blogs.msdn.com server some time back. Originally they were running the same code if I remember correctly.

Also, you have to wonder what’s happening with Microsoft’s online advertising business when they start employing Google ads!   :)

Admittedly, Microsoft is outsourcing this and probably doesn’t pay much attention to it anymore. Still it’s a bit disappointing.

Anyway, as long as you’re subscribed to my feed you should be just fine.

I haven’t yet decided where I’ll move to though. I’m seriously considering just building my own system with ASP.NET MVC. I’ve used quite a few blogging services before but they’ve all lacked one thing or another...

  • I would recommend against rolling your own blogging engine. Unless you want to make it a major part of your career, the security problems alone might just bury you :( (And by 'you' I don't mean 'this is my evaluation of your potential', but rather as generalized advice for, well, anyone)

  • Rick Brewster: Yeah I totally agree… sort of. But I have an ulterior motive. Of course my spare time is so limited right now you may never hear about it again. :)

  • I'm certain that those Google ads were not setup by Microsoft or the weblogs.asp.net team. I was the lead dev on the Weblogs.asp.net site for two years and any ads that are shown on the site are through it's own add server. See http://weblogs.asp.net/garrypilkington/archive/2008/10/22/a-quick-getting-started-guide-to-subsonic.aspx for an example of an ad supported blog.

Based on that Google ad showing up between two feedburner scripts in your HTML, I would venture a guess that it is being rendered by FeedBurner widget or something that you have added to your blog.

  • Dan Hounshell: Thanks for the input. According to neudesic, the company managing the site now, they can't tell where it’s coming from but guess it’s from the blog theme I'm using. I thought it might be my feedburner account but it wasn't reporting any traffic. I'll take a closer look. Thanks!
Update: looks like it was feedburner. I turned some knobs and now it’s gone. I just wonder who’s been profiting from all the ads.
