Window Clippings 2.1

Sorry for the lack of updates on my blog lately. But in the famous words of Dean Hachamovitch: “please don’t mistake silence for inaction”.  :)

As usual, you can get the update via the “Check for Updates” button on the About tab. New users can download the latest version from http://www.windowclippings.com/.

I’ve been hard at work on the upcoming 2.5 release which is turning into quite a feature-packed release. At the same time I know that many users would appreciate an update to address some of the most common usability requests so I decided to release version 2.1 to meet that need. This release is relatively minor with just a handful new features but is notable in that it is the first update to Window Clippings in some time and includes lots of small improvements and bug fixes driven by your feedback.

New Features

A “Send To” menu has been added to the capture screen’s context menu. This allows you to override the default action sequence and send the captured image to an arbitrary “Send To” action of your choice. This is handy if you frequently want to change where you send your images.

A new Selection tab allows you to control the default behavior of the capture and selection process.

Other Changes

As you start using the new version you might notice a lot of small changes designed to make using Window Clippings easier and more pleasant.

Window Clippings now uses Windows Vista fonts throughout (Segoe UI for normal text and Calibri for headings).

I’ve also changed the behavior of the notification icon’s Exit command after Daniel Moth convinced me that the original behavior was wrong. Exit now simply exits Window Clippings but doesn’t affect the startup options.

There are many other improvements and bug fixes. For example the performance of the capture screen on Windows Vista is also improved considerably.

I’ve also made the decision to stop providing a completely free version of Window Clippings going forward. The good news for prospective users is that all of the features are now available to non-registered users so you can try any and all features before you decide to purchase a license. I believe this change will make it easier for new users to evaluate the product and allow me to invest more in the development of Window Clippings.

That’s all for now. I hope you enjoy this new version. And as usual I’m looking forward to your feedback on this new version as well as what you’d like to see in the future. With this release out of the way I will be able to start writing about some of the new features in the upcoming 2.5 release. Stay tuned!

  • Hey Kenny,

Thanks for the update - I purchased Windows Clippings when it first came out and it's more than paid for itself already.

    Can I make a request?

Would you be able to add another new sub-menu to the context menu so that it is possible to quickly select/deselect the "Include mouse pointer" and "Include window shadow" options?

    Thanks once again!

  • I get 2 "WindowClippings.exe" processes running when I open the "Options" dialog. Is this an expected behaviour?

  • Hi Kenny,

I love windows clippings - I have a request though - Id love to see a menu option where you can set the delay timer on the fly, instead of digging through the options every time you want a different value?

    Thanks!

    Monty

  • Well I purchased a version and love it, but why would a person purchase a copy now? What is limited in the non-registered version?

Thanks for setting it up to go to selection box by default. The one feature I've been waiting for.

  • SebHoll and Monty: Yes, I’m working on an approach that will let you quickly change various options directly from the capture screen.

Hüseyin Tüfekçilerli: Yes, one of the background processes is for handling the optional hot key and the other is for the notification icon. They’re lightweight processes and only present if those options are selected.

ck: non-registered users get a watermark reading “windowclippings.com” in the bottom right corner of each image.

    Thanks for the feedback!

  • Hmmm. I have 2.0.28 (registered), and the "Check for updates" button comes back instantly with "Version 2.0.28 is the latest version".

Vista Enterprise SP1; Internet access via cache (working); firewall disabled for test; machine is NATted behind a router.

No worries - I shall update by hand :-)

  • Alan Phillips: That might happen if your computer accesses the Internet through an HTTP proxy. I have a blog post about dealing with HTTP proxies that I’ll post in a day or two.

  • I've asked this before... how in the world do you get this thing to start up automatically on XP? I've checked the box for Print Screen to launch it, but it just doesn't.

  • ck: Do you mean that the setting doesn’t persist across logons or the hot key options doesn’t work at all? Some anti-spyware or anti-virus products try and control what applications are allowed to start automatically. A handy tool for diagnosing such problems is AutoRuns.
Alternatively you can create your own Startup shortcut using the “WindowClippings.exe /hotkey” command line argument.
    Hope that helps.

  • It doesn't persist across logons.

I take it the /hotkey makes it start without the hot key action? As that was the problem when I made it startup automatically.

No anti anything on my system...

  • The startup with the /hotkey did the trick.

Is this information publicly available anywhere?

  • ck: I originally introduced the command line arguments here.
I'm working on getting it all documented on the Window Clippings website.

  • Anyone written a nice FTP add-in? I thought there was one, but can't find it now.

  • Glenn: Ari Glaizel wrote a nice FTP add-in for Window Clippings 2.0 – unfortunately it’s a .NET add-in which makes versioning a little harder. I’ll see if I can get it to work and post something on my blog about it.
