ADO.NET Async Command No-No number 3
Don't forget to call the End method in your callback method of your async command. Not calling it (by accident) seems to result in bad random things.

Hero worship - Rob Scoble
Wow, I just set down and had an almost one-on-one conversation with Rob Scoble today. For about 20-25 minutes we talked about all kinds of things. It was interesting to hear where he came from and some of the things that he was doing @ Channel 9.

ADO.NET Async command no-no number 2
As I worked on async ADO.NET commands on Sunday, I learned an important lesson. If you have a pending async command that has not executed its end execution command, don't try to start off another one. if you do, you will get an InvalidOperationException with the message: A command execution cannot proceed due to a pending asynchronous operation already in progress.

ADO.NET Async command no-no number 1
I was working on some asynchronous commands in ADO.NET Whidbey on Sunday. I was trying to see the amount of time that might elapse between a command starting to execute and the time that the server operation actually occurs. I did something like the code listed below. Note: that this is not the specific code.

Why I will never buy another Dell again
I am currently the unhappy owner of a Dell Inspiron 8200 laptop (kinda like the one in the image to the right, this is an Inspiron 8600). About a month ago, the system developed a problem with the FireWire port. I had to send it back to the depot to get it fixed. When it came back (which is a story in and of itself), the pointing stick on the the keyboard did not work. Note that the keyboard went to the shop working and came back not working. I called Dell and they had a new keyboard sent to the hotel I was staying at in Washington DC. Well that did not fix the problem. I decided to wait until I got done in DC to do anything. With the fact that I picked up a four day gig her in TN this week, did a talk in Alabama on ASP.NET Whidbey, and am leaving on Saturday (8/14) to go to Seattle, WA, I really couldn't be without my laptop. I called Dell support and worked out a deal where they would send the parts to my office and I would work with one of their phone support guys to replace the laptop. I had wanted them to come to my office to fix it or have me take it to there local contracted fixit places in the area. I figure that this was fair because of the fact that they keyboard did not work when it came back from their service center, but they would not. Well, I am working on a .NET book, so being down for a little while was not something that I could really do. Anyway, the parts arrived earlier this week. I was able to sit down today and call Dell support. First, the person said that they did not recommend replacing the keyboard or motherboard without an authorized technical person doing the work. Ok, but I am not a moron either. After an hour of trying some things, the we got disconnected. They had taken my phone number in case we got disconnected. It has been about an hour and a half since we were disconnected and they have not called back. I have emailed the support person that I talked to with no response at this moment.

Win64 for x64 - Sql Server 2005 / Yukon Beta 2 report
Well, it looks like Yukon Beta 2 runs on Build 1218 of Win64 for x64 systems. The only thing is that the Beta 2 Sql Management Studio does not currently run Win64. Accord to Euan Garden, in Beta 3, the Sql Management Studio will run in Win64 in the WOW layer. This is very similar to the VS.NET 2005 Beta IDE works today. I am looking forward to seeing the Sql Management Studio running on Win64. Until then, you can use the Win32 Sql Management Studio from a remote machine to connect to the Win64 system or just use the VS.NET IDE on the same system.

Sorry for the off tech post, but, it is now official. Team USA Basketball officially sucks. The “pros” were beaten 95-78 by Italy, which is not a very good team.
