Taken the Team System Plunge
Ok, so Microsoft's Team Foundation Server has been available for several years. We've stuck with a couple of open source source control / project management apps. John keeps moving things around and trying new stuff. I've just stuck with the evil SourceSafe because it was simple and it worked and as long it was just me working on something, I've survived. No more, I need to move out into the world. I have been working to setup TFS 2008 on Windows 2008 Server with Sql Server 2008, but I found out later that was a no go without SP1 of TFS. I went back to t Windows 2003 with Sql Server 2005. It installed and worked pretty easily. Mickey Goussett andwered a few dumb questions for me. This morning, I found one final problem. I had everything setup, but I was getting this weird error about not being able to connect to the Sql Server Reporting Services. WTF is that all about. In reading through the error log, it dawned on me that the client was trying to connect using the SMB name of the server even though I was trying to connect over ip. I set an entry for the server name in my host file and it all seems to be working now. To make it even better, I have the server running in a virtual server session. If necessary, I can move the server to whereever I want with just a few hours of notice. Very nice indeed. I'm trying the TFS thing. I hope it all works out!

eBook on ASP.NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 First Draft
After much pain, agony, cussing, and fussing, I have shipped off the first draft of an eBook on ASP.NET 3.5 Service Pack 1 to Wiley/Wrox. In a moment of
weaknessfoolishness back in September, I told Jim Minatel at Wiley that I would write an eBook on the new features in ASP.NET 3.5 Service Pack 1. I wasn't able to start until October. I kinda mistakenly glossed over the fact that I was speaking at VSLive in Last Vegas, spent a week going through Ohio to do 7 talks, got sick for what ended up being 12 days, and had my laptop crash on me causing me to lose my first ten pages. Finally, this morning I shipped off the first draft. -

INETA Community Champions (Champs) Program
What is the INETA Community Champions (Champs) Program?
INETA has partnered with Microsoft and Community Credit to offer INETA members the Community Champions Program. We want to recognize, encourage and reward the developers who routinely devote their time, expertise and passion to the benefit of the community.
As we all know, volunteers are the heart of INETA and of our user groups. We all benefit from their passion for technology and their dedication to helping others. People like our officers, newsletter contributors, presenters and all those who pitch in to make the meetings run smoothly. Every person makes a difference ... YOU make a difference.
If you take a moment to add it all up, you would be surprised by what it takes to make things happen ... and by how much INETA members are doing every day. That is where the INETA Community Champions program comes in. The Champs program is designed to help recognize what volunteers are doing, including the many tasks that others may not even be aware of. It allows volunteers to record their contributions, to see what others are doing, and to be inspired by the results. The program also provides two very special recognition processes, the Community Champion Award and the Community Excellence Award.Community Champions Award
Once a quarter, INETA will recognize leading contributors as Community Champions. In addition to claiming this prestigious title for twelve months, awardees also receive a letter of commendation, a certificate of achievement, much deserved online recognition, and a few great prizes. Of course, we want this award to motivate even more involvement, so we encourage everyone, including winners, to record your activities. After all, you are eligible to win every twelve months. Find out more and see what others are doing.
Community Excellence Award
In recognition of their lifetime achievements, INETA is proud to present our most dedicated leaders with the Community Excellence Award. You know the people that we mean, so we are counting on YOU to start the award process by nominating them for this elite honor. These are the outstanding individuals who, year after year, have gone above and beyond to lay the foundation and provide the structure for building our community and to keep it vibrant and growing. They step up when called upon; they are our leaders and mentors; they inspire us to stretch our horizons; and they help provide us with resources along the way. Read about past recipients and find out more about the award.

CodeStock (August 9) Registration is now open
Yes, that's right the registration for CodeStock is NOW OPEN! CodeStock will be the biggest software development conference in the world (the weekend of August 9). There will be world class speakers at the event. Jeff Prosise will deliver the keynote. We have speaker's coming from all over the eastern United States. Heck, we even let some blond guy from Knoxville in. I figured we had to since his company provided the MSDN Premium Subscription with Team Suite ($10k value, or so I am told), which will be the grand prize in the giveaway portion of the event. And registration for the event is NOW OPEN!

Interesting findings on History in .NET 3.5 sp1 beta 1
When you encode the parameters to save the page state, you can't use complex objects. You have to save strings or nulls. Complex objects can't be saved out.

Community Question: How to Monetize Maps?
As some of you know, I've been working with mapping for the last 18 or so months. These maps have points on them that are supplied by a service my customer has. The question is, what are some ways to monetize maps? We've got 4 or 5 ways that we have thought of, but I'd like to get the thoughts of the community. So, feel free to comment in this post with your ideas. Yes, we already have the idea of placing google ads around the pages. Do you have other ad services, better ad services, licensing ideas, or other ideas that might generate income? If so, I'd like your feedback and thoughts.

ADO.NET Data Services in.NET 3.5 SP1 Beta1
I started working on an example using the ADO.NET Data Services (formerly Astoria) in .NET 3.5 SP!. ADO.NET Data Services uses the Entity Framework to expose data to clients in a restful manner. Its ideally suited to data access over ajax clients. For some reason, my sample wouldn't completely run. I could query and delete, but no inserty or updatey action would work. The error messages I got were crap merely saying that the operation failed. What good are those messages? I posted some messages and I decided to contact Pablo Castro about the issue. Pablo was his usual helpful self. He gave me a bunch of suggestions. I went through them and it looked like I needed to have the VJ# redistributable installed. I then mucked up my VPC session. I went back and started from the beginning with a fresh VPC. I installed VJ# redistributable, .NET 3.5 SP1 beta1, Sql Express Management Studio, and voila, I got meaningful error messages finally. With the meaningful error messages, it was cake to fix the updatey problem. The inserty problem magically resolved itself. All was right with the world. Expect a video podcast on this topic shortly along with source code examples and things that tripped me up in the process..

Once more unto the breach dear friends...............I'm an MVP again!!!!
With apologies to taking Shakespeare's line out of context, I'm happy to announce that I have been named a Microsoft MVP for 2008. This is my fifth year as an MVP, and I am really excited about it. Congratulations to all of the others that were named for the January timeframe!!!!!!
