  One question: SATA? No SCSI?
  

• Only SATA (Hitachi Deskstar 160GB). It should be enough for my little workstation.
  
  
  
  It's the first time I have to do it all by myself, so it will probably take some time before all the bits are in their right place... (I won't have to worry about the software before some hours probably).
  

• As this is your first time you build a box: be sure to wear an anti-static wristband which is attached to the case so static electicity is not ruining your HW. You can buy these in any electronic geek shop :)
  
  
  
  I think you have enough space, but check first if you have when you add the heatsinks to the procs. It's often wise to first add the mobo to the case, then the procs and then the heatsinks, however some board manufacturers are so clever to place sockets on places on the board which require you to add the procs and heatsinks to the board prior to installing the board in the case.
  
  

• monitors? I just got a 21" (used) and it makes a world of difference - powered with a 64mb AGP card.
  

• I'm not buying a new monitor... I keep my 21" one . I couldn't go back to a smaller one I think. Could I live under 1600*2000, now? :-)
  

• What speed are the cpus? Hyperthreading? how much ram? Sweet looking system. i remember when i build my Dual Athlon box last year. those where the days. now i have to reinstall it!

• Dualies rock. Silky smooth multi-tasking! Your IDE will love you, you multimedia drivers may hate you, but a good trade in my book.
  

• The harware installation went smoothly. Everything worked immediatly. Now, thats cool!
  
  With Windows XP and HyperThreading it's like I have 4 procs :-)
  
  The only problem right now is that I find the machine too loud. That was something I absolutely wanted to avoid, so I'll have to investigate to know what's wrong. Maybe that's due to the default CPU fans.
  
  
  
  If I ask Dell for the same machine (well they don't offer exactly the same of course), the price is around 2460 euros. Buying and building everything myself, I paid 1550 euros. I think its worth it...
  
  Of course, with Dell you get a three-year garanty. But this is what I get anyway with the CPUs, the motherboard, the power supply...
  
  
  
  It was not only about the price, but also because it's impossible (at least in France) to find a company that would build a machine with these parts.

  This is confirmed. If you plan to buy Xeons, you'll have to invest in CPU fans. The ones provided with the CPUs by Intel are crap! They make a *lot* of noise.

  Tu vois réellement 4 CPUs sous XP ? Je pensais qu'il ne pouvait qu'en gérer 2 (indépendamment de l'HyperThreading)

• J'ai un clavier Microsoft ergonomique boutonneux (cool), et une souris optique (fini les boules) mais filaire (sans fil, je vois pas l'intérêt).
  
  
  
  Oui, oui, sous XP Pro je vois quatre CPU. Il y en a deux virtuels, et deux réels, mais je ne pense pas qu'il fasse une différence. Avec Cinebench, c'est plus performant avec l'hyperthreading activé.
  
  
  
  Ce qui n'est pas cool, c'est que je ne peux pas faire d'overclocking avec la carte mère PC-DL car j'ai un disque dur SATA.
  
  
  
  Je n'ai pas HL en fait. Mais ça doit pouvoir s'arranger. Je suis sur Enemy Territory plutôt.

• Pourquoi pas d'overclocking avec un disque SATA ? Les coeffs sont bloqués ?
  

• Oui, dans le BIOS toutes les options d'overclocking sont bloquées dès qu'il y a un disque SATA :-(
  

• Et si tu enlèves ton disque tu mets ton FSB à 166 (il parait que c'est le maximum avec la dernière révision du bios) et que tu rebranches le disque, ca donne quoi ? tu restes à 3Ghz ?
  

• Eh non, parce qu'évidemment il remet les valeurs par défaut.
  

• Victoire ! La solution : il faut utiliser le contrôleur SATA Promise et pas l'Intel.
  
  Et voila : 2,97 GHz :-)
  
  Résultat : un gain de 23,3% (directement égal au rapport 2,4/2,97) avec Cinebench ! Non négligeable, non ?
  

• De plus si tu as le controleur Promise "standard" (celui que l'on trouve le plus souvent) tu peux faire du Raid 0 en ajoutant un 2eme disque (identique), et c'est la que tu vois la puissance du SATA, car tu obtiens pratiquement 100% de perf en plus !
  
  
  
  

• Oui, je peux faire du RAID, mais je ne l'ai pas configuré comme ça et je n'ai qu'un disque. Je n'ai pas besoin d'autant de perfs pour le moment :-)

  Tu me bats ! Visiblement tes Xéons réussissent bien à CineBench ! Il faudra que je réessaye en supprimant les 30 taches qui tournaient derrière... notamment FlashGet qui downloadait WolfET.exe 260Mo ;-)
  

• C'est l'avantage avec Cinebench, il tire parti du multi-processeur. 3DMark, je ne pense pas.
  
  Il faut voir aussi le rapport performance/prix. Ta machine coûte combien à peu près ?
  

• Je l'ai payé 3065 euros exactement en juin 2003, difficile de comparer avec la tienne, tout évolue tellement vite...
  
  

• Correction: the screen resolution is of course 1600*1200, not 1600*2000!
  

• remarque 1600x2000 on y arrivera bientot ! d'ici quelques années faudra être en 3200x2400 pour arriver a voir une simple icone sans la scroller !!! cela imposera donc des moniteurs de plus en plus grand... à l'heure où l'on cherche à tout miniaturiser...

  Haaaa ! le bon vieux temps ou mon Amiga 500 suffisait à tout faire, 0.7 Mips bien utilisé ca peut faire plus de choses que 7000 Mips avec Windows :-(
  
  

• D'ici quelques temps les écrans auront bien changé. On pourra les rouler ou les plier et les emporter sous le bras. Ils pourront aussi être transparents si besoin. On pourra les accrocher au mur comme un poster.
  
  Ok, ça va prendre un peu de temps, mais ça va changer pas mal, alors la taille ne sera plus un problème comme aujourd'hui.
  

• Ca tombe bien, j'ai déposé un brevet qui s'appelle "Under your arm screen display technology" ;-))
  
  
  
  Moi je pense qu'a terme l'écran disparaitra et que le PC se branchera directement sur le cerveau pour afficher les images dans ton esprit. On ne sera plus tellement loin de Matrix...
  

• Si quelqu'un dans le coin a une PC-DL, ça pourrait m'aider. J'ai un petit problème avec mon BIOS...
