Wally has done another good podcast which can be found here on jQuery support in Visual Studio 2008 and how it compares to ASP.NET AJAX by way of some simple examples.

Debugging Silverlight apps using WinDbg
While working on a silverlight application for my current engagement, we were seeing some weird memory issues and application crashes. I won't bore you with the initial investigation of the issue, but it turns out we need to delve deep into what was going on behind the scenes. A fellow colleague and friend, Miguel Madero, was also encountering similar issues. He also did some work in debugging the issues he was seeing, and because they were similar to mine, I had a little headstart in where to look. Note: I know that Miguel will also be publishing some debugging tips around Silverlight and he is a Silverlight gun so keep an eye on his blog for more details.

WCF, IErrorHandler and propagating faults
On a recent project, I have needed to set up a generic error handler just above the service layer which ensured that only known exceptions were propagated up to the client in a controlled manner. This post contains information about how to write an IErrorHandler, but more importantly, it does contain an important point at the end about its implementation that I wanted to share, as well as save for my own reference on this blog, in this wonderful inter-web thingy.

EOAST - Evolution of a software thingy - Part 3
This is the the third instalment of my experiences and ideas around the development of a piece of software to initially satisfy my disappointment around Outlook and also to allow me to play with some new technologies and making them all work together. Part 1 is here and Part 2 is here.

EOAST - Evolution of a software thingy - Part 2
In a part 1 of this series, I talked about what was the purpose of coming up with this "software thingy". Now I will tackle some of the design aspects that have evolved as I have been working on it.

EOAST - Evolution of a software thingy - Part 1
Its been a little while since I have blogged as I haven't had very many value items to add to the blogosphere lately. However, I have been steadily (albeit slowly) working away on a little software project that may or may not see the light of day, but it has been a fun learning experience, and may eventually come to something. If nothing else, its a good testbed for a number of latest technologies.

MSFeedsSync - feeds Synchronization has stopped working issue
Recently (and quite randomly I might add), I had an error dialog popup continuously, every 5-10 minutes which read:

VisualSVN - Subversion within Visual Studio
I am a big fan of Subversion. I like TFS too, but subversion is more suited to my small scale personal needs whereas TFS is more in the corporate space, or at least, more in the "requires more juice" space. Juice that I don't really have.

ASP.NET Podcast Show #118 - Peer-To-Peer with Windows Communication Foundation (WCF)
So I *finally* managed to get a videocast/podcast done. Wally has been harassing me for ages, and I eventually had the time to get one done. This one is on the Peer to Peer support in Windows Communication Foundation (WCF) and how easy it is to do. Its remarkably simple yet extremely powerful.

WCF services getting errors when hosting in IIS
This post is more for my own records than anything and I have been meaning to write this down for some time.

VSTS 2008, Web Tests and using Fiddler
I have been doing some performance and load testing of a web application I have been working on lately. Most of my previous experience was with the 2005 flavour of VSTS and I was keen to play with the 2008 version to see what improvements have been made. This web application is quite heavy in terms of Javascript and AJAX feature usage.

Visual Studio 2008 Team Test Issues
I have had ongoing problems getting various tests to work using my installation of VS2008 Team Suite. Initially, I had a problem running unit tests (see here), then sometime after that, I had other niggling issues with code coverage and had to copy assemblies from Private folders to public folders and vice versa.

Reducing page load times with UpdatePanels and timers
I have demo'ed this technique before and talked about it various times, but I recently used this on another engagement which really helped alleviate some of the initial page load times and size.

ASP.NET MVC and IE8 WebActivities
One of the great things in readify is the ability to do Professional Development at scheduled intervals to keep up to speed with the latest industry technologies and advancements. My latest foray into this (amongst other things) has been looking at the ASP.NET MVC framework and Internet Explorer 8 WebActivities. Both of these technologies are quite cool and I wanted a way to learn about them both and link them in some way where I could learn about them at the same time.

Why wont you just work....
In a previous post on some problems I had with VS2005 and unit testing where running unit tests always gave me this:

WCF & ASP.NET Role Provider
So I was talking to Shea Strickland a relatively new starter in readify who is doing some WCF work and asked about the role provider support in WCF. He pointed me to an article by Dominick Baier who mentioned that the RoleProviderPrincipal in WCF will actually cause a database call each time an IsInRole check is performed.

ASP.NET, CSS & Control Adapters
I thought I'd pass on some link love to Damian Edwards, the resident readify CSS god. Here recently did an RDN presentation on using CSS effectively with ASP.NET and the first of a series of articles on that very subject can be found here.

I had a requirement for a client where we were upgrading a web site that had a business web service exposed, and we had to create a new service that was identical in operation to the old (from a consumer perspective).

Like probably many MVP's who get re-assessed this time of year, this post is an announcement of me being re-awarded MVP status for another year.
