Get a performance pop within a Sql CLR Stored Procedure
According to the BOL with the October CTP bits, you can get a performance improvement with Sql Server 2005 CLR objects if the send the results directly to the network buffer and bypass managed memory. How do you do this?

Nuts - UGA 19 - GT 13
Well, I must admit that my boys did a much better job than I had thought they would do on Saturday. UGA opened up a 16 - 0 lead at the half. UGA's qback David Greene had to go out due to an injury to his hand. Backup QB DJ Shockley threw a touchdown pass on his first series after replacing Greene to make it 16 - 0. For the next 30 game minutes, the Tech defense took over and dominated the UGA offense. DJ Shockley looked like he didn't know which end was up. In the third quarter, Tech closed to 16-13. While dominating the game, Tech could only muster 13 points due to a determined UGA defense. Sensing things were in flux, David Greene came back in the game and led a UGA drive starting midway through the fourth quarter to get a field goal. On their final series, Tech moved to the UGA 20 yard line with about a minute to go in the game. On first down, there was a screen pass with no gain. On second down, Tech qb Reggie Ball took an 11 yard sack trying to elude the UGA defense. On third down, to stop the clock, Tech spiked the ball. On fourth down, flushed out of the pocket and needing 21 yards for a first down, Reggie Ball through the football away and Tech turned the ball over on downs. UGA ran one play and the game was over. Congratulations to the UGA defense, they won the game for Georgia. Better luck next year for my Tech boys. Thank goodness we won't have to deal with David Greene who has been a Tech killer over the last four years.

Winform change between beta 1 and October CTP
FYI. I just went back to a winforms application in beta 1. It ran fine in beta 1, but when I opened it in the October CTP bits, I got a complaint from the MyApplication.vb file.

Phil Mickelson shoots 59 - Offtopic
Lefty shot a 12 under par 59 at the Grand Slam of Golf. While the course was relatively short by the stanards of the monster courses seen on today's golf tour, 59 is still 59.

is the fact that the compiler runs in the background in Everett and i can see my foulups pretty easily and can then correct them.

Now, here's a golf ball that people could really use. Unfortunately, if I remember my rules of golf correctly, self correcting golf balls are illegal. :-(

Football Fantasy League - My Defense Ruled today
Wow, the defense for my fantasy football team just finished. In our league, it seems that defense is the big loser. I had two defenses to chose from today. I had the Tampa Bay Bucs and the Chicago Bears. I looked at it and I sayd, gee, I'll take TB in TB vs. SF as oppossed to Chicago in Bears vs. Colts. Wow, what a good choice. The TB defense was worth 18 points today vs. the Bears which was -39. The average defense in our league is worth -12 or something like that, so I'm up 30, just on the defense over average. Oh yeah, my opponent had the Arizona Cardinal's defense, they are at -30 right now. The current score at this time is 82 to -30. I hope the difference will hold up.

Open a Sql Server 2005 CLR Object just like a TSql Object
Did you know that you can open a Sql Server 2005 CLR Object just like you can a TSql Object? I find this very cool. Definitely a welcome feature. One thing not obvious from this screen shot is that I have my Sql CLR Project open to the right hand side.

Opening a file back from the Assembly programmability list
I don't know if you have seen this or not, but I just ran across this. It is the ability to open a file up from the Assemblies item in Visual Studio .NET 2005. This is very cool as it attempts to mimic the ability to open a Tsql object and edit it directly. Very cool indeed.

Thanks to a few folks
I wanted to give a public thanks to Bob Beauchemin (who I met once back in July, 2001), Kent Tegels (who I have never met) and Niels Berglund (who I have never met) who have been so helpful with a number of questions in the Sql CLR newsgroups for Yukon and Whidbey. Happy coding folks.

UDTs in Sql Server 2005 (Yukon) and VS.NET 2005 (CLR Object)
I just wrote a user defined type in VS.NET 2005 and deployed it to Sql Server 2005. I deployed the CLR Object to my Sql Server 2005 instance. I was pleasantly surprised when I started to create my table which used the UDT. When I went to the drop down to select a datatype, bang, my UDT was listed. So cool, just the way that it is suppossed to be. :-)

ADO.NET Whidbey talk in Roanoke, VA
I will be going to Roanoke, VA on December 2nd to talk about some of the features in ADO.NET Version 2 that will come with Whidbey. I am really excited and interested in talking with user groups again. This will be my fourth talk this year after only one talk during a fifteen month hiatus of doing talks From June, 2003 to August, 2004.

Section 508 support for the DataGrid in ASP.NET 1.1 SP1
I just tracked down and found that the Section 508 support for the datagrid is in SP1 of ASP.NET 1.1. There is now a property of a datagrid that is called UseAccessibleHeader. by default, the property is false. When set to true, the property the DataGrid's table is rendered with the <th> tag.

AssociatedControlID property in ASP.NET 1.1 SP1
Thanks to Scott Galloway for pointing out the AssociatedControlID property was added to .NET 1.1 SP1. Now I don't have to go through all the pain that I thought I had to in my previous post about creating Section 508 compatible labels on the client-side.

PreviousPage object in ASP.NET Whidbey
Along with my previous post about the PostBackUrl property, there is now a PreviousPage object in ASP.NET Whidbey. To get back values from the controls, you will need to do something like this:
-
Post from one page to another using ASP.NET Whidbey
With ASP.NET Whidbey, a button has a property named PostBackUrl. That property may be set to other pages. This has been lacking in ASP.NET 1.x.

Political WTF? - Exit polling - AND VERY NON-TECHNICAL
I drove from Washington DC back to Tennessee on Tuesday. While on the road, I got to listen to "talk radio" discuss exit polls and how poorly President Bush was doing in the exit polls. By the time I got to Tennessee, I figured that John Kerry had won the election. I listen to early results last night before going to bed. I figured that the numbers would change over night and that we would have a new President when i woke up. I woke up this morning to FoxNews stating that President Bush had won. Results are still not in and obviously nothing is official at this point. Ohio and Iowa are still in limbo at this point according to CNN. FoxNews has called them based on the margins and the number of absentee votes still to be counted.

Format.Native with Sql Server 2005
One of the things that I have learned (the hard way) when dealing with a user defined aggregate is that your code should use Format.Native as the native serialization format. The will result in your data being formatted with the native Sql Server binary serialization. There a couple of problems with this format.

SQL CLR problems in deployment w/ Sql Server 2005 (Yukon) and VS.NET 2005 (Whidbey)?
If you pay attention to the sql clr newsgroups, you know that I was battling a problem with creating an aggregate function with VS.NET Whidbey and Yukon. Well, I was able to get this resolved. Something that is very important to pay attention to is whether or not the object has been deployed. There is a small textual notification in the bottom left hand corner of VS.NET. That is where you get a notice of whether or not your object has been deployed. If you get anything besides deployment succeeded, you will need to open up the "Output Window" to see what the problem was. Personally, I think that there should be a big popup window on a deployment error.

My second political statement of the season!
If you are in the US and are eligible, go vote on November 2. Vote for Kerry, Bush, Nader, Jon Stewart, Kirk Allen Evans(just kidding), Howard Stern, or someone, but go vote. Vote on national and local issues. Over 30% of the registered voters in my state (Tennessee) voted early, including me. Go Vote!
