My VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 Talks Online

The past 7 years I’ve done an annual all day event in Arizona – organized by the most excellent Scott Cate (who always does a phenomenal job organizing the event and making it a great one). Earlier this month I visited and presented 4+ hours of content covering VS 2010, ASP.NET 4 and ASP.NET MVC 2. The talks are demo-heavy and show off a ton of new features.

NextSlide.com – a .NET shop local to Arizona who has a great product for sharing presentations – volunteered to record the talks and publish them for free using their online presentation tool.  The recordings they did turned out really, really great – and their online player (which combines slides + camera of me + demos in one experience) is awesome.  Below you can watch the first two segments of my event – which cover VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4 – for free online using the NextSlide.com player experience.  I’ll post a link to my ASP.NET MVC 2 segment a little later in a separate blog post.

If you’ve never seen me present these talks before and are interested in VS 2010 and .NET 4 content then I’d recommend checking them out – as these recordings do a really good job capturing them.

Part 1 - VS 2010

This is a 49 minute segment that starts the event and covers a bunch of the new improvements in VS 2010.  You can launch the presentation directly here or watch it inline below.  You can download powerpoint versions of my slides here.

Part 2- ASP.NET 4

This 61 minute segment comes next and drills into some of the framework improvements with ASP.NET 4.  It also goes further on some of the web specific tooling improvements in VS 2010 – and towards the end demonstrates some of the great new end-to-end web deployment features provided with VS 2010 (which work for both ASP.NET Web Forms and ASP.NET MVC applications).

You can launch the presentation directly here or watch it inline below:

Learning More about VS 2010 and ASP.NET 4

I’ve been working on a series of blog post about VS 2010 and .NET 4.  Many of the features I covered in my two talks above are described in more detail in posts within the series.  You can read all of them here. I’ll be continuing adding to the series via my blog, so stay tuned for more in-depth posts about a bunch more new features.

Hope this helps,

Scott

P.S. People often ask whether they can re-use the slides+demos I use in my talks for talks of their own.  The answer to this is always absolutely! No need to ask permission. Feel free to re-use all of my slides for talks of your own.

P.P.S. In addition to blogging, I am also now using Twitter for quick updates and to share links. Follow me at: twitter.com/scottgu

Any chance part 3 (or the rest of the video('s)) will appear online soon? Or am I missing a line somewhere explaining the why/when?

I've heard VS 2010 is going to be presented on WW Apple DevCon on June 7, are you by any chance giving the demo? Will VS 2010 really support iPhone development or will Apple allow Silverlight apps?

This is little out of topic...

Why Microsoft Silverlight plugin website www.microsoft.com/silverlight still installs Silverlight 3 as default and provides "Silverlight 4 is Now Available" as another link?

When you think how hard Silverlight team works to bring the next version, this is sad and very inconsistent, who ever responsible for the default Silverlight plugin must fix this ASAP.

Wow, that presentation software is impressive! Useful features that I haven't seen on any other slide sharing webs sites yet. http://info.nextslide.com/ ? Is it new?

The presentation is great, but the player (NextSlide) is terrible. It looks fancy but it keeps stopping the video and saying "Synchronizing Timeline" but not doing anything. I could not finish watching the presentation. Even with the people from NextSlide plugging fake comments to promote themselves, their software is poor and, like someone else said, it uses Flash instead of Silverlight. Thanks anyway Scott, your stuff is (as usual) fantastic.

Part 2 isn't working for me "The presentation cannot be embedded in this site. Click here to view on its original page". I get this same message on the original page, anyone else get this problem? I enjoyed the first one though.

In watching the snippets and jQuery intellisense demos, what I see isn't the same as what's shown on the screen cast. jQuery for example shows "$(a,b)" for the hinting when I type "$(", but the presentation shows a whole paragraph of info.

In an .aspx file when I type "lit" I don't get a list of snippets like shown. If I tab tab it'll finish to "literal" and another tab tab gets me the whole server tag. Is there some key I need to press or some other setting?

Hi @fernando - my Name is Scott Cate, and I run the Arizona.NET user group. We've had the pleasure of working with @ScottGu for many years, and every year we contemplate recording the sessions and getting them online. The fact is, that it's a very difficult task, and we've tried for several consecutive years and could never get it right. This year we tried again, and the folks at NextSlide volunteered their product, hosting, and labor to put up the videos we recorded. We weren't able to capture the whole day of video due to some technical problems, which is why the 3rd part of Scott's MVC2 talk is missing.

To flash vs. Silverlight arguments? I know it's flash, the option here is no video, or flash video. Which is better?

And I'm sure your comments about the fake promotion posts are out of anger that something isn't working for you. To this I apologize. The video is out there online, and to-date almost 30,000 views have been ticked.

Bottom line is ---- video online is difficult. It's going to fail for some, but at the end of the day, I'm happy we did the work so that the talks could reach many more than the live attendees. All we can do is our best, with what we have, learn from it, and try to do better next time.

Amazing Scott , nice and cool features , I have some crazy thoughts that I would like to share it with you and wish to see them in the future:

1-End day of javascript!, really we don't need to know all these "js" and "jq" we need a decorator that Map our native C# code to client and server side code , for sure it is not easy but imagine mapping all these tech to a nice and clean C# and what we need from MS is to hire those "js" and "jq" experts to write the mappers, few guys efforts save millions of developers time.

2- I wish to see a 3d Debugger , a debugger that act like a Map/Movie and can draw and visualize variables and function calls  , or can record them as a 3d Movie for a Run , and through watching and skip forward and backward fast you can figure out the problem .

again nice work and I like your "To the point" way , many features and knowledge in short time. keep your innovative work , 10/10.

Great post scott! Very useful :)

Unfortunately, I could not get past max 15 mins of smooth (almost smooth) playback of your first video. And I didn't try the second one for obvious reasons. This NextSlide.com player is really so poor. It wasted almost whole day of mine and yet not getting what I wanted. Please discourage in future the use of such players with really poor playback capabilities.

Thanks for the post, anyways.

Please keep up the good work :)

Great presentations!!

Could Visual Studio 2010 “Find in Files” file type filer take something like “!*.designer.*;*.cs” (only look in *.cs but not *.designer.cs file) as folder comparison does in TFS Source Control Explore?

Thanks.

Hey! I'm one who can't live without box selection! I always loved that VS developers remembered to include this feature, since it's very useful when dealing with code...
