Repairing a trashed Office 2007 B2TR installation, and dealing with Error 2711

The Issue

Last night's automatic Windows Updates trashed my Office 2007 clients, including Outlook, Word, Excel and OneNote. Only Groove survived, and it went through a reconfiguration when the machine restarted. Re-applying B2TR returned the message that "this update has already been applied." Word and Excel 2007 bombed on startup with the message "EXCEL.EXE - Ordinal Not Found: The ordinal 6140 could not be located in the dynamic link library oart.dll."

The Solution

1. In Add/Remove Programs, uninstall: Office 2007 Premium Plus, OneNote 2007, Groove 2007, and the Expression Designer CTP.

2. Download CCleaner. Run it, and under Tools you will find 4 more 2007 applications, including language-related components and a MUI. Uninstall these. Note that Microsoft Windows Cleanup will not perform a proper uninstall for these, it simply removes the related registry entries. CCleaner will actually run an uninstall if the information is available, and most of the time it is.

3. Install OneNote, Groove, and then Office 2007 Premium Plus. Preferably do it in that order, and using the slipstream install for Office 2007 Premium Plus to install the B2TR patches at the same time. To slipstream the B2TR at the same time you install B2 (so it's all one seamless install), simply extract the contents of B2 and B2TR into separate folders (let's assume those are the names you use), and then move the extracted B2TR files into the B2\UPDATES folder.

To extract the contents of the install files you simply run each .exe with the /extract option. For example, this extracts the files into a c:\b2tr folder:

office2007b2tr-kb000000-fullfile-en-us.exe extract:c:\b2tr

4. Run the setup.exe. After entering your product keys and agreeing to the EULA, select Customize rather than Install Now / Upgrade Now. Expand Office Shared Features, Converters and Filters, Graphics Filters, and select "Not Available" for the CorelDraw filter.

I'll say now that I didn't re-install the files in the above order, I went straight for Office Premium Plus and now I'm having difficulties getting OneNote back, with the same Error 2711. So, I'll unwind one more time and confirm the above, but first, off to tonight's SharePoint User Group Meeting!
