Orchard Harvest 2014 - Day 3

This session was about the future of Orchard. We discussed about the next major version.
The most wanted enhancements are on Data Access, Theming, Caching, Content management and Environment.
The ASP.NET vNext has amazing new features (Roslyn, Performance, Portability).
Speaker: N. Taylor Mullen
Taylor is a developer in the ASP.NET team and is currently working on ASP.NET vNext.
He made some very interesting demos with a new ASP.NET vNext application explaining how to add dependencies, retrieve configuration, specify routing, add controller and view component.
Speaker: Bing Huan Chio – 343 Industries
Bing is in charge of the Halo Waypoint blog (https://blogs.halowaypoint.com) and explained how they use Orchard as a Backend to edit the blog posts and expose theme through a REST API.
Many other people from the Halo team attended this session.
Building an Orchard SaaS - DotNest
Speakers: Benedek Farkas, Zoltan Lehoczky – Lombiq
The results of the Orchard Harvest challenge were announced:
- MiniProfiler by Daniel Dabrowski
- Inline Editing by Matías Molleja
- Dynamic Forms by Cybage Software Pvt. Ltd.
Then, the Lombiq guys made a demo of a template module using the Liquid markup syntax.
They also presented their SAAS solution to host Orchard instances easily : https://dotnest.com/.

On the second day of the Orchard Harvest, we had the chance to attend great sessions with awesome speakers.
Speaker : Damian Edwards
The Program Manager at Microsoft on the http://ASP.NET team presented the future of SPA applications.

From Boostrap to Orchard in 20 minutes

Sébastien demoed how to build a theme TheBootstrapMachine similar to the one used by weblogs.asp.net.
It just took him 45 minutes (Slides included ).
Speaker : Sipke Schoorstra
Sipke (Ideliverable) made a demo on an approval content workflow.
Many steps (mail, timer, jobs, …) composed this huge workflow.
Speakers : Travis Maddox, Adam Anderson - AMC Theatres
2 developers of https://www.amctheatres.com/ exposed the architecture of their solution and the steps to adopt Orchard as a powerful CMS.
This web sites has 30 millions page views / month.
Speakers : Eilon Lipton (Principal Development Manager), Scott Hunter (Principal Group Program Manager)
Scott talked about the vision of http://www.asp.net/vnext and the future of .NET.
Eilon made some impressive demos with Visual Studio 14 and the new asp.net vNext web application.

The next version should integrate new modules and enhancements like :
Audit trail, Deployment, Rest API, OData, Localization, Dynamic layout, …
The Orchard project site and the gallery will also have a redesign.
Panel - A Conversation with Core Contributors Followed by Q&A
Speakers : Bertrand Leroy, Piotr Szmyd, Sipke Schoorstra and Sébastien Ros.
The members of the steering committee answered questions about the future of the project.

Conference Orchard Harvest 2014 in Redmond–Day 1
This year, the 3rd conference Orchard Harvest has been organized in Redmond on the Microsoft campus on June 9th-11th.
Speakers : Ylan Kunstler - Bertrand Leroy
Bertrand gave us a little idea of the state of the project.
Orchard has released 20 versions in the last 5 years.
666k downloads on Codeplex, 6.1 modules downloads on the gallery.
92k messages on the Codeplex forum, 3000 questions on Stack Overflow
High Density Hosting with Orchard on Azure

Sebastien talked about the migration of the 750 blogs of http://weblogs.asp.net/ on Azure in a single Orchard instance.
The cost to host all of these blogs is just 350$/month.

Themes, Layouts and Slideshows - Onestop
Speakers : Jorge Agraz, Eric Perez – OneStop
They are one of the early adopter of Orchard.
40+ of their websites are using Orchard and they develop module to build their own ecommerce solution.
A public repository is available to retrieve some of the modules they share with the community.
Proligence, Projects, and Open Source

Piotr listed 3 modules that Proligence share as Open Source projects.

It has been integrated in the core modules.

Steve made a little history of web components and how to bind templates in javascript.
He made a demo with Polymer.js (http://www.polymer-project.org/) to consume the youtube api and display and search videos.
