Doug Reilly
Doug Reilly passed away today. I met him only a few times and he was a good guy. Fellow MVP, ASPInsider, and lover of technology. My thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Media Player in Vista and Codec Hell
I have installed Vista Ultimate, and I have been unsuccessfully trying to get a whole bunch of older video files playing on Windows Media player lately. I have to say the general codec support that comes shipped is pretty poor. At least 75% of my files cannot be played. You might be saying, just go download the codec’s. Well thats often easier said than done, particularly when it comes to the .ASF format. I have a small video camera that uses the .ASF format, and the software that comes with it, that I assume installs the ASF drivers, if ofcourse incompatible with Vista. Trying to find an ASF codec to use is pretty damn hard and I have had no luck thus far.

ASP.NET AJAX RC and ScriptControls
In a previous post, I talked about how to go about creating your own ExtenderControls. Lately, I have been busy creating another control to add into the Ajax Control Toolkit, however this control is based off a ScriptControl.

ASP.NET Podcast statistics
Wally sent me some log files that show how much traffic we are getting for the latest ASP.NET Podcasts. We are getting some really good stats (well I think they are good, but are probably pretty small compared to the bigger sites and more popular podcasts). We have been clocking in at up to 12,000 downloads for one of the more popular videos that Wally did, and I think my Scott Guthrie interview is getting around 6000-7000 downloads.

Wally does UpdatePanel video
Wally has produced a new video on the subject of the ASP.NET AJAX Updatepanel and the Clientside Page Lifecycle. The video contains information about the UpdatePanel, the clientside page lifecycle, and handling errors. This video is an updated version of the show from this past summer.

ASP.NET AJAX Control Extenders - rolling your own
The release of Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions is due very soon, and it contains a wealth of functionality. The AJAX Control toolkit is an open source, free library of controls and additional framework that sits on top of the Microsoft ASP.NET AJAX Extensions. If you want to create your own controls using the ASP.NET AJAX extensions, you can either create it using the base classes of the ASP.NET AJAX Extensions itself, or you can use the additional features that the AJAX Control toolkit provides.

WPF/E VS2005 Template
I saw a link on Andrew Stopford’s blog which pointed to yet another blog by John Rayner that showed a way of installing the WPF/e template into VS2005 without Web application projects. Well, my templates still didn’t install properly and I did have the Web application project extensions installed.

Juval Lowy in Oz for WCF classes
readify have managed to get Juval Lowy to come to Australia to present an Industrial Strength WCF master class. Juval is Regional Director, a principal at iDesign and is listed by Microsoft as a Software Legend. (His details are at: http://www.idesign.net/idesign/DesktopDefault.aspx?tabindex=3&tabid=5)

Xmas gift
A lot of people donate to charities and have their preferred way of trying to make a difference. One of the ways I try and do so is via WorldVision. We have been sponsoring a child for about the last 5 years and have found it a very rewarding experience. Its great to see the progress they are making and be able to swap letters and find out all about their life and culture.

ASP.NET Podcast - Scott Guthrie Interview
Its been a little while between podcasts, but I finally got around to interviewing Scott Guthrie and have posted it for your listening pleasure.
-
Photsynth demo - ready for you to try
I have seen an application called Photsynth talked about and demo’ed in various ways in the past few months, but now there is a way you can play with it yourself.

The promised interview . . . .
During TechEd2006 in Australia (held in August), I was supposed to interview Scott Guthrie but unfortunately it did not pan out (Scott was fully booked and a little ill at the time). I did get interviews with Jorke Odolphi, George Moore, and Eric Deily though.

Using blogmailr
So Rob Howard has announced blogmailr, and I used it for the first time to do my last post. Its pretty cool as one of my most used clients is Outlook, and I can use it to blog which makes me happy. Although, being the lazy, forgetful person I am, I need to make things even easier.

ASP.NET AJAX Beta 2
So AJAX ASP.NET Beta 2 is released. If you are using the AJAX Control toolkit, you will want to grab the latest release set so that it works properly with Beta 2, otherwise, as soon as you install Beta 2, the toolkit will break.

Debugging Javascript on a Live site - Fun and Games
I was discussing debugging of Javascript on one of the ASP.NET Ajax forums recently and thought I'd share how I go about it, as you'd be surprised how many people are unaware of this capability.

Secure TextBox Updated
There has been quite some interest in my SecureTextBox control that I developed. Basically it offers textual entry via a standard textbox, but uses the SecureString as its internal storage. Typically aimed at entering passwords and similar secure information on a windows form.

More on ASP.NET AJAX Web Service Proxies
Previously, I posted about the difference between the proxies generated by the earlier CTP release, and the current Beta 1 release.
-
VS2005, Project files and Assembly References
In a project I am working with, I was migrating some projects from V1.1 to V2.0 of .Net, compiling and building all very happily, until another developer grabbed the latest code from source safe and found that a bunch of assembly references were invalid and therefore the project could not build.
-
ASP.NET AJAX Web Service Proxies
You have no doubt seen the multitude of posts talking about some of the many changes in the beta release of the ASP.NET AJAX libraries compared to the CTP releases.

AJAX Control toolkit and the latestASP.NET AJAX beta
I have been very quiet in the blogosphere lately. Lots of things have been keeping me busy, particularly some family related issues.

Wally does Devlink
Update: I previously posted that this was Devlab, and it is infact Devlink. Wally pointed this out to me just this morning and apparently this post came not long after Wally's post so it looked like I was doing a double promo. I didn't realise he had posted just before me and I thought I was doing him a favour. Thats what you guess for just trying to be nice I guess..... and since I am not in the habit of removing posts, I am sure the blogging community will happily ignore my post anyway so I dont think its too drastic. If it is, then send your feedback to someonewhocares@limbo.com

TechEd Done and the Atlas mashup demo
TechEd in Australia is done for another year. Boy am I tired after all that. Satisfied but tired. Tatham Oddie and myself did a presentation on how to build an Atlas mashup using some local aussie content. It was the last session on the last day and went pretty well I think.

TechEd Australia Interviews
A post or two ago I mentioned that I would be interviewing some prominent people in the industry while they are at TechEd in Australia for future ASP.NET podcats. So far, the responses have been overwhelming. Because you probably can't see the sarcasm in my typing, that means I received zero suggestions for questions.
-
Webcast - ASP.NET Podcast Show #65 - Atlas Integration with ASP.NET Services - Login/Authentication, Roles, and Profiles
Wally has done another webcast around Atlas. He also calls it a podcast although its not really. Maybe we could call it a podwebcast, or a webpodcast, or a poddedwebcast or a....... ahh bugger it. Its a video about Atlas stuff. Great for learning about a very valuable feature of the Atlas framework.

Questions from listeners for upcoming Podcast interviews.
As part of TechEd 2006 in Sydney Australia, I am lucky enough to have been given some time with some key presenters to do a podcast interview(s). Have a look at the list of people I'll be interviewing at TechEd below. If you have any questions that you'd like me to specifically ask any one of them, I'd love to hear from you, and I'll pass it onto the resepctive individual when I am interviewing. The list of people I am interviewing is:

PasswordStrength Extender control available via latest Atlas Control Toolkit Release
A little while ago, I posted about a new Atlas extender control I was developing called the PasswordStrength extender. This control utilised the Atlas Control Toolkit as a foundation from which to build. A number of people asked when this control would be released to the public, and I am proud to say that it has finally been released as one of the new components available with the Atlas Control Toolkit.

The book is almost out!
Yes, its almost here. The "Beginning AJAX in ASP.NET" book is ready for release. Wally points out that an advert for the book appeared on the Amazon home page which is kinda cool, and for a first time author, gives me a warm fuzzy feeling.

ASP.NET Podcast Show #60 - Atlas UpdatePanel - Video Special
It seems Wally is revving up that podcast engine again. He mentioned a little while ago about doing video's to accompany the podcasts which I think is helpfull, especially in code intensive podcasts. Here is his first go at it.

Overdue Podcast Post - ASP.NET Podcast Show #58 - John Papa
So this post is long overdue. Been busy and sick lately and subsequently, missed posting this much earlier. Apologies to listeners and also to Wally.

Future Development - Next 10-20 years
Did a post over on TechTalkBlogs today about what I think the future may look like for some application development (and thought it interesting enough to cross post to from here). No real surprises, and not real deep, but would be interested in others views.

Reflecting over the Page from an ASP.NET Server control at design time and some debugging pain
I am working on an ASP.NET server control, and one of the properties of that control will typically contain a name of a boolean property that the Page exposes. At runtime this boolean property is called/examined and some action is taken as a result, however at design time, I wanted my ASP.NET control to be able to reflect over the page it is hosted on, and present a dropdown list of properties to select from, based on what the page has exposed.
-
Updating Component properties in the designer
I have been working on a set of custom ASP.NET controls that offer specific design time experience for a client. Part of that is to make some existing controls very designer friendly. Apart from some custom rendering, I have been adding SmartTag support to the control to enhance the design time experience. For those unaware, a good example of a SmartTag (or ActionList in coding terms) is shown below:

Guest Blogger at TechTalkBlogs
I have been fortunate enough to be invited to be a guest blogger over at TechTalkBlogs. I have started the ball rolling and hopefully I can keep the momentum going that Rocky and Darren started.

ASP.NET Podcast Show #56 - I talk about Atlas and Load Testing
So I finally got around to doing another Podcast. I have been quite busy working mostly on Atlas and making sure Wally keeps himself out of trouble. Hopefully you find it enjoyable. Please excuse my less than "radio like" voice.

Atlas control competition - win an MSDN subscription
On DotNetSlackers, there is an Atlas control competition where you can win an MSDN subscription for writing a good Atlas control.

WWW = Wally's Wonderful Webcast
Yeah corny title I know, but good friend Wally McClure has done a webcast (http://www.wrox.com/WileyCDA/Section/id-292013.html) on Atlas which you may want to check out. It covers quite a bit of ground and goes further than a lot of the current webcasts which cover the simpler aspects of Atlas.
-
Woohoo - Vista Error
So I loaded up Vista on my laptop to show my 15 year old son what it looked like before I blew away the partition it was residing on. It loaded up, I logged on and walked away so he could have a look around the new Windows OS.
-
New podcasts, HDTV, Atlas Password Strength Extender
I was supposed to get a new ASP.NET podcast done this weekend, but have only done it partialy and not complete yet. It will contain some information around my new Atlas control extender I am working on and also some info around web load testing using Visual Studio Team Test. I worked on a project that had to simulate 10,000 concurrent users using a web farm of servers and client PC's so I am going to talk a little about that. Alas, the podcast is not quite there yet. I hope Wally forgives me.
-
DotnetSlackers community - using Atlas juice.
I have been poking around at DotNetSlackers (http://www.dotnetslackers.com/) lately and looking at some of the new content being offered there. DotNetSlackers is a recent community site developed by MVP Sonu Kapoor and has caught my attention because I have been heavily involved in Atlas lately, and DotNetSlackers has some new Atlas related content on there. There are some new controls developed by Garbin who is extremely knowledgable when it comes to Atlas stuff. Not only has he put up 2 Atlas controls with source code, but he also offers his mashup site that has been developed with Atlas, with full source code.
-
Atlas databinding and Custom transformers
In Atlas, its very easy to delcaratively perform databainding between 2 controls, or a control and some datasource such as a web service.

Blowing my own Trumpet
On a completely non technical note, but something I am pretty happy with is managing to finaly pass my 4th degree black belt grading in Budo Jitsu just yesterday. Its a fairly long grading thats goes for around 4-5 months. At 3rd dan and above, its very technical, with me (and my training partner) having to hold 3 seminars, organise the material, know it inside out and be able to demonstrate it, market the seminars and a whole bunch of stuff for the 4 months. Then on the last month, we have some time to prepare a short demonstration of all the techniques, with some imprompt demonstration of favourite techniques thrown in.

ASP.NET Podcast Show #54 - IIS7 with Brett, Thomas, and Chris
The Wally podcast factory is back to its usual podcast producing frenzy. Here is a good one on IIS7.
-
Vista Beta 2 finally loaded - like and dislike
So I finally got Vista Beta2 loaded onto a separate partition on my laptop and am dual booting it and my original Windows XP. While I dont get all the 3D magic as my laptop graphics card isn't quite capable, it still looks a very sexy beast. The UI is very slick, and it feels quite different.
-
Update to the Atlas Password Strength Extender control
I have made some updates to my Atlas PasswordStrength Extender control that I mentioned previously, and that wax also mentioned by Scott Guthrie in a previous post. You can have a look at the control on a test page here (http://www.theglavs.com/ControlTestPage.aspx).

Atlas PasswordStrength Display Extender control
I have been writing an Atlas Extender control using the Atlas control toolkit in my spare time lately, and I thought I'd share its progress with everyone so far. It's certainly not complete and is a bit raw, but it does display the strength of the password you are entering into a textbox interactively.
-
Atlas Control Toolkit and the DefaultValue attribute
Suppose your working on a new extender control using the Atlas Control toolkit that has been released (and recently updated with some more controls).

Performance testing with 10,000 concurrent users
Lately, I have been concentrating on performance testing within an application I am working on. This is using the Team test portion of Visual Studio. It certainly is a powerful tool and is exponentially better than anything offered to date by Microsoft.

Last chapter is in!
So I have finally submitted the Author review portion on the last chapter of the book ("Beginning AJAX in ASP.NET") I am working on with Wally McClure, Scott Cate and Craig Shoemaker (whose wife has recently gone into labour and probably had the baby by now so congrats Craig!). Boy, am I glad to have finally got here. There may be more work if a second round of editing and changes is needed on this chapter but it will be fairly small if there is one. This chapter was on debugging (server and client side) and was much easier to write because of the experience and lessons I learn't from the previous chapters (and also the great help of our Tech Editor Steve Smith - thanks Steve!).
-
I finally get a podcast out - #49 - SecureTextBox and other bits and pieces
-
Atlas, caching & CodeCampOz
Well CodeCampOz is a done deal. I was lucky enough to do 2 presentations on Atlas, one an Intro talk, and the other a little more detailed. Both seemed to be received well.
-
ASP.NET Podcast - Book Edition - show #48 - Jim Minatel
-
CodeCampOz, Atlas Demos and "The Book"
CodeCampOz is almost here (April 23rd/24th in Wagga Wagga - New South Wales Australia for you non aussies) and I have 2 presentations to give. The first one is a Intro to Atlas and will cover the main concepts with some simple demos. The 2nd is more of a deep dive into Atlas. Both presentations are pretty short (approx 50 minutes is all we have) so its important to get things across quickly but clearly.
-
My 2nd Chapter (Chapter 4) is done.
Chapter 4 (my second chapter) for the soon to be released book on AJAX in ASP.NET is done, author reviewed and submitted. Only 2 to go.
-
ASP.NET Podcast - Double Whammy - Shaun Walker, Rob Howard & Scott W.
Yes, this is a double post about two new shows being available for the price of one. What a deal. How could anyone want more? And it comes with a money back guarantee. If you don't like the shows, we will give you a 100% refund on what you have paid us for this show. How can you go wrong with that?
-
ASP.NET Podcast Show #45 - Thomas Lewis and Keith Smith
Wally squeezes out another show with some good interviews. Keith Smith and Thomas Lewis.
-
Wallace McClure - The podcast factory - show #44 with Rob Scoble
Wally pumps out yet another show. This one is an interview with "he whose name shall be blogged". Yes, Robert Scoble.
-
Catching up with Wally
Its hard keeping up with Wally. As a result, he has pumped out podcasts like a machine which I have not kept track of. Here are the last couple of ASP.NET podcasts for your listening pleasure. I have been meaning to do one soon as I have a store of stuff to talk about, but I am struggling with time at the moment. At any rate, here they are:
-
Creating Gadgets in Atlas
I was chatting to Darren Neimke over the weekend very briefly about some Atlas things and he mentioned that he would have a post on gadgets coming up soon. His post will no doubt have more detail than mine, but I thought I'd mention this anyway. I hadn't played much with Gadgets but after talking with Darren, thought I'd give it a shot.

Bit old but....ASP.NET Podcast Show #40 - Udi Dahan - The Software Simplist

Site Update - Atlas enabled
I have spent a little time updating my personal website (http://www.theglavs.com) as of late. Firstly to make some management and administration items a little easier for myself (as its actually getting some interest and a healthy number of hits) and secondly, I wanted to Atlas enable the site with the latest March CTP bits.
-
SecurePasswordTextBox update
Since there has been so much interest in the SecurePasswordTextBox control (see my previous post http://weblogs.asp.net/pglavich/archive/2006/02/26/439077.aspx and http://weblogs.asp.net/pglavich/archive/2006/03/12/440052.aspx ), I thought I would take the time to iron out the bugs. When I first released it, I performed minimal testing (i.e. about 15 minutes worth) and just thought if anybody else is interested, then I might put some real effort in.
-
My SecurePasswordTextBox control is famous.
Recently, I developed a version of a textbox that uses the SecureString class for its internal storage, called the SecurePasswordTextBox (can be downloaded here http://www.theglavs.com/DownloadItem.aspx?FileID=46 ). Its actually been used in a webcast by a guy called Dan Sellers in MSDN Canada. Check out the post here ( http://blogs.msdn.com/dansellers/archive/2006/03/08/546679.aspx ).
-
Final Chapter is in!
Well a milestone has been reached for me. I just submitted my final chapter for the upcoming book on "Beginning AJAX on ASP.NET" that I working on with Wally McClure, Scott Cate, and most recently Craig Shoemaker.
-
Online Security Chats
If you are interested in Security, then try not to miss the upcoming Security chats being held towards the end of this month and the beginning of April. The URL for these chats is here http://www.microsoft.com/australia/eforum/chat.aspx and feature one my good friend Rocky Heckman. Rocky is one of readify's security guys (well actualy readify's main security guru) and knows his security stuff.
-
ASP.NET Podcast Show #38 - Anand on the GridView and Wally on VB.NET 2005 My Namespaces
Wally has pushed show #38 out the door. This one includes Anand Narayanaswamy talking about the Gridview control. One thing to note is that the sound quality with Anand is very poor so please bear with it.
-
SecurePasswordTextBox - A textbox that uses the SecureString class
In a previous post, I mentioned that I was working on a small side project to develop a version of a standard Winforms textbox control that utilises the SecureString class from the System.Security namespace in .Net V2. Well I have finally released this 'SecurePasswordTextBox' control for others to use and comment upon. It comes with full source code so you can see what I have done. Note that I have not done anything particularly elegant in the way it handles textual input, however its small, and works for the very brief testing I performed.
-
Making use of the SecureString
In .Net V2, there is a class called the SecureString in the System.Security namespace. Its a nifty little class that stores its contents in encrypted form, and is not subject to managed heap garbage collection side effects, where copies of the string are left around while waiting to be collected, and also its string value is not sitting in memory for all to see, nor are multiple copies made each time a character is added and a whole bunch of other things I have talked about previously. Basically, it allows secure storage, in memory, of a string, such that tools that can pry into your memory, don't see things they are not supposed to.
-
Playing the XBox 360 in Oz
Since I have been working at the Microsoft SDC here in Sydney (North Ryde actually), Australia, I have been lucky enough to have a play with the XBox 360 units that are available. They haven't been released in Australia yet (March 22nd I think) so its pretty cool being able to give it a test drive. Only some demo games have been loaded on them though like King Kong, Call of Duty 2, and kalea (or something like that).
-
I have been slack - ASP.NET Podcast Show #37 - January CTP of Atlas
I have been reallybusy lately and have not posted about the latest podcast that Wally did. No wonder he hasn't been talking to me much lately....
-
Atlas and error handling
Was playing around with the January CTP of Atlas which was recently released and found the error handling within Atlas interesting.
-
DOMValidators go public
Its a little late, and I should have done this a very long time ago, but I have finally made the DOMValidator control set a public, open source project on GotDotNet for other to join and contribute to. Its is available here (http://www.gotdotnet.com/codegallery/codegallery.aspx?id=2c7a6f50-e57b-4606-91a2-ad35bdda6ab7) or http://codegallery.gotdotnet.com/domvalidators - its all the same place.
-
ASP.NET Podcast - Show #36 - Personal Web Site Starter Kit
Ok, so I have actually got busy and managed to do a podcast. The main content on this one is about some good and bad points on the personal web site starter kit that is available for .Net 2.0. I have recently used it to create my new site at http://www.theglavs.com and thought I would share some impressions of it, its internals, and how it held up for me.
-
Cool Webcast: CLR Method Dispatch Internals: From Static to Dynamic
This might be old news to some so I'm sorry if its a repost, but this webcast is excellent at showing some of the internals of method invocation, reflection, and some of the new lightweight code generatin features of .Net 2.0.
-
ASP.NET Podcast Show #35 - Michael Mahemoff of AjaxPatterns.org and SoftwareAs.com
Wally interviews Michael Mahemoff who is a fellow Australian and well known AJAX dude.
-
ASP.NET Podcast - Show 34
Wally does another good job on the latest podcast, this time talking about some database concepts that everyone should be aware of. Some of the concepts may be basic or common knowledge to some, but could be news to others. Enjoy.
-
DOMValidators and Firefox
Sometime ago, I released a set of free set of controls called the DOMValidators ( available here http://www.theglavs.com/DownloadItem.aspx?FileID=28) that are a set of client side validation controls that basically mimic the validators that come with Visual Studio.NET 2003 except that they work in many other browsers apart from just Internet Explorer.
-
ASP.NET Podcast Show #33 - MSMQ
Wally has done another good job, this time concentrating on the Microsoft Message Queue in .Net apps.
-
Quick Fix Notification on AsyncClientScriptConnector Control
I have recently updated my site (http://www.theglavs.com) with a new look as I mentioned here, but in doing so an old version of my AsyncClientScriptConnector control crept onto the site and has been there for the last couple of days. I have noticed a bunch of people downloading it, so if you have grabbed a copy of this in the last couple of days, please go grab the copy I have there now as its the "proper" version. The previous one used an older version of the ICallbackEventHandler interface.
-
New Web Site, Personal Web Site Starter Kit, MVP Award
I had a few days of easy going in between chapters so I thought I'd catch up on some things I had been putting off. I had upgraded a majority of my old site to V2.0 a little while ago but had yet to put the final touches on. You can see it at http://www.theglavs.com . Its based on the Personal Web Site Starter kit (http://msdn.microsoft.com/vstudio/express/vwd/starterkit/default.aspx) that is freely available. You simply install it, and have these ultra functional web site templates ready to customise. I'll be posting a full review, with some pain points in an upcoming ASP.NET Podcast (http://www.aspnetpodcast.com) soon so look out for it.

ASP.NET Podcast review
Wally IM'ed me today and pointed me towards a review of the ASP.NET podcast that we work on which can be located here (http://www.dotnetworkaholic.com/Technical+Podcasts+Recommendations.aspx).
