Syncing your Microsoft mobile with Windows Vista RC1 via WMDC
In Vista, bye bye ActiveSync, welcome Windows Mobile Device Center (I think again a complicated acronym WMDC sounds like WMD, hopefully this won't explode too much!).

The new toolkit not only helps to preserve VB6 applications, but also lets developers add functionality to them through additional .Net forms. -

Do you think SSMS is slow?
Yes totally agree with Simon about SQL 2005 Server Management Studio, it sucks! Too slow, too slow. I can't figure how DBAs who use this monstruosity can cope every day with this tool?!?

Coding4fun new project - barcode reader and Amazon web services
I just found this interesting project on Scott Hanselman blog. This is really a beast. The idea is to read books with a CueCat barcode reader, then after some decoding, building a web services to call Amazon and then integrate the results in Windows Live Writer! Pheeew!

Vista far away from being ready ?
Well if 'VIP' like Scott Hanselman have issues on the reliability of the latest Vista RC1, that doesn't sound very good at all.

The whole Zune story started with a bunch of Lego bricks :-)
It's always fascinating to see how an engineer team can start a whole new product range. I like to know more about the iPod infancy, but you can already see by yourself that a box Lego bricks are now part of the Zune project history. I wonder if the Xbox has started like this too? Something unfortunately we can't do with software!

Storing Images to Database and Retrieving to GridView
Over the internet, one can easily find a lot of references for uploading images to a database. The major problem arises when one has to retrieve these images and display them in some server control, like the GridView control.

Enhanced ASP.NET ImageButton Custom Control with Roll-Over Effects
This article describes an easy approach to extending an existing ASP.NET control; in this example, the standard toolkit’s ImageButton control is extended to support roll-over effects. Given that the standard control already contains support for both server-side click events and client click events, the control is well furbished prior to the addition of the roll-over effect.

Zune box is sexy after all
I can't find the link anymore, but some time ago, I remember this fun parody of Microsoft creating a package for an iPod with all the jokes about the box finishing covered with dozens of warning and stickers everywhere.

Change the Font Size to Help your Readers
Nice little trick posted by Brennan about proposing different font-sizes in your web application. Sure most browsers support font resizing, but it's usually on the whole page so that your CSS are screwed up.

Apple innovation is losing grounds very fast
Apple's hyped event today is a real disappointment! Nothing new there, just few upgrades on the iPod range, maybe a wireless TV box (not really a novelty).

Should I wait for Orcas?
Like many web developers I am excited by the news about Atlas and the full commitment by Microsoft to support in the future its development.

Atlas HoverMenuExtender example
The Atlas HoverMenuExtender is one of my favourite controllers in the Atlas toolkit. I've often thought about having all those minor details off the main screen, but still have them easily and quickly accessible. I see this control as a nice easy way to do this, so I'll show you how I'd do that.
What is it?
The Atlas HoverMenuExtender gives you a way to easily add a panel with extra content to a control, without clutteruing up the screen. You can bind all the data in your grid, while at the same time binding your hover menu panel, therefore keeping all you code in one simple place but adding nice functionality. -
